How I Burn A Siblings Portrait

Initial Outline

This is a portrait I was commissioned by my son-in-law to burn. The piece depicts four siblings, and they all went in on the piece as a Christmas gift for their mother. In this video, I'm burning the initial outline after hand-transferring the art outline to the surface of the wood.

Here is the completed piece for reference. Below I’ll show a sequence of photos showing the various steps in my process.

Here is the original Mock-Up showing how I lay out an image before burning. I first edit the photo settings on my computer to print in the size appropriate to the project I’m working on. Sometimes, depending on the size of the project, I may have to break an image into several pieces, printing multiple pages to create a complete picture. In this case, the piece is small enough that I was able to print the photo on one sheet. After printing the image, I then lay it out on the surface to be burned. For this piece, we chose a 12x16-inch French Corner Basswood Plaque. Graphite transfer paper was then placed under the photo so that I could hand-transfer an outline to the wood.

Then comes the fun part of shading and bringing the photo to life!

After the shading was completed to my client’s satisfaction, we then added lettering to represent each person in the portrait.
